Random Tuesday Thoughts #2

by Margo on March 24, 2009

randomtuesday

I like this Random Tuesday business because it’s so …. what’s the word? Random! I can randomly forget to do it for several Tuesdays in a row. And as I’m sure many wiser randomers before me have said, there is nothing to randomize, except randomness itself.

Which reminds me, can anyone tell me what “above the fold” means in blogging language? I know when USA Today first came out, back in 1982, a year that, from what I can tell, most bloggers were born, some people predicted the death of the local newspaper as it was known.

At the time we thought this meant merely less substance and more colorful pictures. Which apparently it did. No one even knew the word, “internet” in 1982. I couldn’t have imagined that paper part of news would be almost gone. So were you taught where this virtual fold is in grade school? Do web pages fold? Am I missing a whole half of something?? If webpages are different lengths, how do I know when I’ve gotten to the half?

Now that the entire baby boomer generation has invaded Facebook, I have noticed an interesting, but predictable generational backlash. My 16 year old daughter fessed that she and her friends had pretty much bailed on Facebook. They’ve secretly gone back to spending most of their time on the more expressive, and frankly, more troubling, My Space. I’m concerned about parents who believe the digital age has in fact improved parent/teen relationships based on the fact that they are friends with their minor children and all their children’s friends on Facebook.

Little Jessica doesn’t appreciate your thrice weekly “love, mom” notes on her wall. Jessica hides them. They don’t call it My Space for nothing.

I strongly suspect the producers of the Young and the Restless put subliminal messages in the show in order to bring otherwise intelligent, somewhat sane, women to express more concern over the future of Ashley and Victor, than over their children’s possible possession of a secret and potentially embarassing My Space page. And I think it also makes me eat more leftover birthday cake.

Princess Sparkle celebrated her 13th birthday this past weekend with a sleepover campout. She pretty much looks the same to me as she did last week. But I think all my friends look the same as they did in high school.

Hey, yeah! What IS that “above the fold” business? My computer doesn’t fold. Maybe in a few years they’ll fold, but not now.
You are a brave woman- thirteen year old slumber parties will take years off your life. It sounds like they had a great time, though.

Pretty much when your blog is opened, and you EC can be seen, that is above the fold. At least that is what the voices have told me.

Folding your computer, ironing it, and putting it in a float so you can surf the Internet while you are in the pool are all ways in which you will void your warranty.

Uh, that’s what I’ve heard, anyway.

Unlike with newspaper lingo, Internet above the fold means different things with different services. Whoever you are talking about should explain their definition. I like the ones that give me pixel count but that is because I am a little OCD.

My kids are a little younger, but aren’t I allowed to spy on them with all kinds of computer tracking software?

I think the producers of Days of Our Lives have the same subliminal messages, but dedicated to chocolate. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Your randomness was very fun.

I find random slipping into blogs everywhere, along with “Wordless Wednesday” and “Caption This”.

Could it be the bloggers are getting tired of the routine and working toward not having to write anything at all?

I need to know what that above the fold thing is too. I haven’t got a clue. If it’s within sight of the first page load, wouldn’t that be relative to the size of monitor you have?

They’re leaving Facebook in droves because of adults. How insulting.

From what I understand, ‘above the fold’ is within the first click of ‘page down’ on your computer… something like that… :) I like Anne’s request they give you the pixel count to assist with our OCD… ;)

So the teens are leaving Facebook in droves because of the adults…that’s pretty funny… ;)

Great randomness! Happy RTT! :)

I thought Facebook was more of an adult thing anyway. Teens don’t need to reconnect with people they went to high school with, and be subsequently shamed.

Happy Birthday to PS! So…did they last in the tents all night long? No idea what “above the fold” means .. haven’t heard the term til now, actually.

sounds like you have been very busy I can remember the 13 year old slumber parties this weekend chaperoning youth group to large convention for church so wish me luck

Vic, a few years off my life and I guess I’m even further from getting above the fold. PS and her clones definitely had a wonderful time. They were pesky and spacey. I’m beginning to think there is something to the Chinese birth year concept.

Da old man, thanks! I guess I go by my huge monitor instead of the 10 inch one on my netbook. They might as well just say, “put it up there, way up there, where we can see it!”

Shawn, as always you blow me away with your technical know how!

Anne, the pixel count concept makes me want to shut down the computer for a week or so and take a very long nap. No OCD here, but everywhere around me at my house. Use that software if you can get it to work. When we got new computers a year or two ago, I couldn’t figure out how to work ours in a way that would let kids do anything. Email me if you want info. Little people, big ears are everywhere in these parts :)

Humorsmith, as a writer, that’s my ultimate goal. I’m looking forward to rarely having to depend on anything as postmodern as a muse, originality or even words.

blueviolet, I’m so glad I’m not the only one. I thought that I missed the memo or something. Insulting is right! I’m feigning obliviousness – if the kids smell blood of offense on me, I’ve already lost :)

stacy random, RTT was made for us! Princess Nagger has a while before she’s into stuff like FB. It’s just good to remember that very soon, she’ll try, somewhat sucessfully to be a step or two ahead of you. Play dumb. Let her think this.

Keely, I did too, until a year or two ago, my same daughter and most of her “friends” – whatever the heck that means – jumped from my space to FB, for similar reasons. Many parents were on to the My Space thing and insisted on monitoring pages, demanding logins, etc.

phdyogurty, both my daughters have always loved this camping business. Dad was an Eagle Scout and I’m clearly not. I like blow dryers and climate control. They stayed out there all night. Some times it has been hard for me to get them out of the tent.

Annie, Good luck to you this weekend. Thanks for stopping by!

I don’t know internet language except for LOL. Sad, I know.

13 Staci March 25, 2009 at 9:03 pm

I wouldn't doubt it about the subliminal messages. Why else would I tune in to the Victor-Ashley-Nikki love triangle for the last 20 plus years? Seriously, I've been watching Y&R since I was kid, and it's the same storyline over and over.

From what I can understand reading the forums and blog at EC, if you hit the page down button on your keyboard and you can still see your widget, you'll be fine.

14 Margo March 26, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Mrs. G, It's best only to learn on an as needed basis. I think it's a good sign for humanity that LOL is the universal favorite! LOL!

Staci, Y & R is good this way, because you can tune in every 3 or 4 years and know exactly what's going on. For the above the fold thing… I'm measuring on my huge monitor then.
