Temporary Holiday Insanity

memorialday 017
It started out like a typical Memorial Day afternoon with dogs of the nitrate laden and edible variety.

Then the resident dog rescuer/whisperer introduced us to this stray she took in a week ago. She and her three children have put signs up all over the area. So far, they’ve gotten no response. This is her 37th rescue.

Yesterday this little fur ball, whom we knew better than to give a name, spent some time at our house on a “test run.”

Have I mentioned to you that I’m allergic to dogs?

For several years I did research on dog breeds that are, if not hypoallergenic, at least less allergenic. Last summer, this research included sticking my face in the fur of our future dog’s gene pool before she was even conceived. I drove for five and a half hours just to encourage an entire pack of labradoodles to lick my eyes.

If I was going to have an allergic reaction, I wanted to know it. No way did I want to be faced with having to give our future beloved family pet back.

Now, less than a year later, as a dog owner who isn’t allergic to labradoodles, and owns the best one on earth, I want to believe that this non-allergic status transfers into not being allergic to any dogs. We are thrilled beyond measure to have Lily the Labradoodle.

So that must mean it is now time to mess it all up.

With horses, dogs, cats, rabbits and four young children, it didn’t help that the neighbor who was holding the Memorial Day festivities has the cutest family ever. And none of their four children have yet hit the big 1-0.

Ah-ha moment alert. Is that all this is? Am I preparing for my years as an empty-nester who prefers dogs to humans? Am I on that slippery slope of someday becoming someone’s unhealthy and unstable mother in-law who needs to get a life?

Is giving into this instinct to have small creatures under my care simply me projecting activity onto an emptiness that only exists in my mind?

I’ve come a long way in the past couple of years. I’m all about the path. I’m not about the result.

Fortunately, I have my family to keep me in line. And I can say now that some credit is due myself. I knew it didn’t feel quite right to one morning happily wake up with one dog, and with little thought or consideration given to anything except my immediate want, to go to bed that same night with two.

Even if he does look like this.

Not that I really needed it, but verification that this time, I chose the right path came this morning in the form of the worst cold I’ve had in ages. Don’t know if it’s related, but I wouldn’t be able to help but always wonder.

How could you reject a face like that? {*grin*}

We’ve had three dogs over the last 25 years, and all have come from the pound or animal rescue – and all were chosen because they looked like they needed us.

Awwwww! Both puppies are sooooo cute!!

What cute dogs. Who could resist them :) Thanks for sharing :)

Seems like Lily doesn’t mind him. So, are you going to keep him? He’s very cute!

Great pictures. This post does nothing to help me in my campaign to resist the urge to get a dog of my own. If it happens in the next week or so, I’ll blame this blog.

(Or thank this blog.)

Poor little guy. He must have been hard to hand back over, even with a cold. Hope he finds a good owner.

Dan, very reluctantly! Lily is actually across the street playing with “Dog Doe” as I write this.

thinkinfyou. Once he got over being terrified of Lily, they got along great.

Thom, I’ll keep ya posted.

Sheri, Lily LOVES him. For her that is expressed through jumping on his back and barrelling at him like a battle axe and biting his tail and ears. He, understandably wasn’t so sure, After Lily figured out this wasn’t the best approach, she would go lie next to him, not too close, and make these pathetic whimpers. The kid needs a sibling :)

Jeff, dog ownership is the greatest thing ever, but it’s an investment in love, time and money. Best to be ready. But, I think you’re ready and should get one NOW :)

LawyerMom, he’s kind of pitiful, very sweet and gentle, but you can tell he’d been on his own for a while.I’ve missed him all day even though I have a blasted cold. Which is just a cold. Right?

I don’t think the publicist has ever had only one cat….
And she certainly doesn’t have one goat….
Or one chicken…

Heh heh. It is a cute little doggy.
I hope you feel better.

They are really cute – and especially together. I can see why you couldn’t resist, and pets are the best of companions – much nicer than people! Ha! Thanks so much for your visit, Margo. I will add you to my followers list also.
Best -
Catherine

Oh they do look good together!

Oh, mommy, how can you reject a face like that!? Obviously he loves you already! What a cutie. And you are so super sweet to give him a home. Hope it all works out for everyone. :o )

13 The Mother May 27, 2009 at 12:41 am

I will try not to mention that that cold may very well not be a cold.

OOPS.

Dogs are for the kids. Not that they do anything after the “OH, we’ll do EVERYTHING!”

As much as I have enjoyed not having to clean spills up off the floor, as our household disperses, the dog finds less and less to do other than bug ME.

14 Trudy May 27, 2009 at 3:19 am

Adorable puppies and they look like they are already so happy together!

15 Vic May 27, 2009 at 3:35 am

It’s impossible to resist their little faces. Don’t overanalyze it, just enjoy. Unless, of course, your cold is fur-induced….

16 Marie Reed May 27, 2009 at 9:35 am

I’m on that slippery slope myself! I want ten zillion kittioes in the house and children who roll their eyes at their cat bonkers Mum!

17 Joy May 27, 2009 at 10:33 am

Oh those faces are absolutely irresistible. :o )

18 Gaston Studio May 27, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Rescued pets are the ‘bestest’ in my opinion, they so need us!

19 the iNDefatigable mjenks May 27, 2009 at 1:10 pm

I dunno…as much as I love my kids, sometimes when they’re running around in circles screaming and shooting each other and throwing themselves off the couches in fake deaths, I think “You know, dogs just bark and mess on the floor every now and then.”

20 Banteringblonde May 27, 2009 at 4:11 pm

aww … ya know what though? Dogs are harder than kids IMO

21 Margo May 27, 2009 at 4:59 pm

Pricilla, I guess having at least two of everything makes sense… if you live on a farm :)

Catherine, Thanks so much for stopping by! I look forward to following you too!

ModernMom, they bring out each other’s natural highlights!

Sparky, He does love me already. Sparkle told me … she went to visit him with Lily yesterday and he told her so.

Mother, thanks for trying so hard! Tether to planet earth much appreciated!

Trudy, thank goodness for digital cameras!

Vic, the faces are adorable. When I’m all well, we’re going to try another trial :)

Marie, if I’m not on some kind of slippery slope, it’s usually no problem for me to find one!

Joy, I hear ya. Thanks for stopping by :)

Jane, if it weren’t for the allergies in our house, we’d be right with you. Just trying to avoid wreckless abandon. My daughters and I can’t stop talking about him, so I’m not sure how we’re doing :)

TIMjenks, AND you can put dogs in crates without concern of social service agencies.

Fiona, I know that dogs can be more work than kids in some ways. I’ve got mixed feelings on it right now. I’ve worked really hard with a trainer to get lily trained and now, am I ready to do it again? Will me or my daughter choke to death?

22 Lin May 28, 2009 at 1:53 am

Uh oh, I think it was meant to be. I mean, look at that face!! And just think of the posts he/she will inspire.

23 WhisperingWriter May 28, 2009 at 3:53 am

What a face. And really, I don’t even LIKE dogs. But all these dogs are really cute.

I think what makes me nervous about dogs is the fact that they like to stick their nose in my crotch or my butt. Then I have to politely push them away and some dogs get the hint but other dogs do not…

24 Margo May 28, 2009 at 1:03 pm

Lin, Somebody will definitely want the little guy.

WW, perfect dogs aren’t born, they’re trained. Crotch sniffing is definitely imperfect!
