Tornado Dreaming/Random Tuesday Thoughts

by Margo on May 12, 2009

In my real life today, storms of thoughts that have stayed so safely in the distance for quite some time come closer. I can seem them, just as sure as I saw two tornadoes last night in my dream. These thoughts threaten me, trying to make me think they are real.

A woman speaking in a voice that is too loud for a doctor’s office into a bluetooth thunders into the waiting room. She takes up too much space, flinging her body and bag around. She sits next to me even though there are plenty of other places for her to sit.

“Sometimes a girl just needs her mother,” this forty something blares as if to the waiting room, and to whom I assume now to be said mother at the other end of the bluetooth. She goes on to say her father is unsympathetic. The word “crap” indiscriminately is sprinkled about. Her cat doesn’t like her new kitten and she knows she’s causing him emotional damage. I’m curious to know what this means. Mostly, I want her to shut up.

Her foot, as many do at this particular type of doctor’s office where ADHD is treated, won’t stop moving. I want to smack the thing, shod in an ugly old Birkenstock and make it stop. I dissect every detail of her personage in convoluted effort to make myself feel better. I know enough about this therapy “crap” to know I am mad at myself for something. For being unable to tune her out, and maybe something more.

I’m an odd egg today, but in effort to keep my promise to blog the good, the bad and the ugly, I’ll tell it like it is. I blame my tornado dream. I’m a vivid dreamer and sometimes they are hard for me to “shake off.” I will go through my day with the world feeling slanted and needing a Diet Coke. I’d like a do-over. I don’t like it. And I want the storm to pass.

I dreamed that not one, but two tornadoes were coming towards us. When I told my friends we needed to get out of their path, they didn’t believe me. These friends were fabricated, existing only in this dream. They told me they had to see the tornadoes for themselves, and they couldn’t see them.

“Trust me. I know what I saw,” I told them. Until hail the size of beach balls started landing all around us, they remained unconvinced. Then came some teeth gnashing from all of us, knowing that we live in a place – horror of horrors – where there are no basements.

After being hit by a Volkswagen-sized piece of hail, one of my dream friends remembered that one place in town had a basement. Apparently everyone had the same idea. Masses of people were running towards a narrow brick entrance with an even more narrow pathway that would lead to safety. I knew masses of people without enough space to breathe would be down there.I would rather be sucked into the vortex of a tornado than go in. I would wait until the last second, and be the last one in, if need be. I could then be the first one out. As if hell was a place from which I would escape..

Then the storm was gone, and I was alone on the street.

So, wanna throw your hat in the vortex of analysis? Or perhaps know any good jokes? Love you guys! Cheers to a sound night’s sleep all around!

Because Tuesday is among the best days for being random, head on over to visit Keely. Lots more randomness can always be found at The Un-Mom.

Tornado dreams–I get them. Usually when I’m harried, stressed and feeling out of control. When I looked them up in dream analysis, I think tornadoes represent being out of control in your life. And there are rarely only one tornado coming–like yours, I have multiple coming right at me. You aren’t alone in this one–it is freaky and very scary to awake from that dream.

My dreams have been about biological warfare that starts in Target. I have no idea what my dream is trying to tell me. I wish you lots of good sleep!

3 Margo May 13, 2009 at 1:19 am

Lin, that is interesting about multiple tornadoes. I guess it should make me feel better that I only had two!

Beeker, I’m seriously LMAO right now. Frankly I’m stunned that all my dreams don’t take place in Target. Thanks for stopping by!

I once had a dream during a tornado! The wind got to spinning around so quickly that I nailed my head on something and fell fast asleep. I dreamed the tornado took my entire house to a magical land, full of beauty and danger. And you were there, and you, and you!

All right, you get the idea.

Do you own a dream dictionary? I do, I have strange dreams and it always makes me feel better to have them told to me like a fortune teller in the morning….yeah I know, I’m a weirdo!

I have lots of dreams about being stranded on an object of great height, balancing up there, or trying to figure a way down. Clearly frustration dreams.

I get that “odd egg” feeling a lot.

A tornado would definitely be things all stirred up and out of control. Also you don’t feel heard or validated at the moment it sounds like.

Is there anyone you want me to use my stern teacher voice on for you? Let me know. :)

No tornadoes, I still mostly get the zombie dreams. Last night I half woke up at the exact moment hubby was coming to bed (he works nights) holding his cel phone for light, and I thought, “GAH! ALIENS!”.

Um, my dime store analysis: Some external force is making you feel out of control and like nobody is listening, but you’re internalizing it, which makes you even more stressed out. I have no idea what it might be, though. Zombies?

Shawn, you have a great future ahead of you in children’s books… the really good ones that adults like too. Since I was there and all, be sure to put me in the story. I’d like to wear a large pink dress and travel in a bubble! It be nice if I could help people with their problems too.

thinkingfyou, I should get one of these books. Some days I would like a whole staff of specialists around to talk me through my day. I know! Weirdo!

Jeff, truly, it is very lonely at the top … and hard to stay there. Frustrating when the only way to go is down. This sounds like a boy dream to me. :)

Vic, all true. I’d like to find my stern teacher voice. I’ve always been impressed by the power of it. Any hints?

Keely, excellent dime store analysis, Lucy. Feels dead on. If I had zombie dreams, I’m not sure I’d ever leave the house!

Weird, I was just in a doctor’s office too (annual checkup). I would have to put a stop to the overbearing phone conversation.

BTW, you can’t have Diet Coke anymore. Mr. Obama has decided to throw more taxes on our sody pop (honest to goodnees, heard this one the news this morning). Welcome To Fascist America.

I so love your blog…even to the point where I forget to drop on it sometimes! (Oops – my bad!)

I’ve “tagged” you. If you have a few, I would really like to see how you answer the questions. If you’ve already done this, I’m sorry I missed the post. (I promise I did go look – but I didn’t see one.) http://bit.ly/13Psft

And I’m glad you’ve joined the club – I’m an “odd egg” every day. You’re perfect for this not-so-exclusive club! (Keely is one who should definitely join, too. She’s fabulous!)

Thanks for brightening my day! :)
xx

oooh, I HATE tornado dreams. Well, I am scared to death of tornadoes so it goes to follow. I wouldn’t even let the hubby DRIVE through Kansas on our cross country trips.

15 The Girl Next Door May 14, 2009 at 1:08 am

Wow Tornado Dreams. Never thought to have those. Til now. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

And your writing? Awesome.

All I can think of is that scene from Twister where the cow gets carried away in a spiral of air…

MMMMMMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I was like, 12, and I almost cried. I love moo-cows.

17 Margo May 14, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Stacie, Me neither! It looks pretty ominous out there right now… should I go hide out in the pantry?

Sparky, the bluetooth and cell phone business has definitely changed everything… it’s as if some people think they are alone!

Katherine, always glad to have a new odd egg friend! Thanks for the tag :)

pricilla, definitely worth avoiding the whole state of Kansas!

girl next door, I’m ridiculously suggestible myself and apologize if I brought out your inner Dorothy :)

Lilu, that cow scene is forever emblazoned on my mind too! I think I thought Bill Paxton was hot in that movie. Did 12 year olds?

Lauri’s Dream Dictionary, http://www.thedreamzone.com:

Alone/Lonely: To be all alone in a dream means it is time to handle your current situation by yourself. No one can do this but you. (see Abandon)

Basement/Cellar: Place where you store memories, attitudes, behaviors, etc. that you would like to forget about, that you keep below the surface. Can sometimes symbolize the past.

Escape/Escaping/Escaped: What situation are you trying to escape in waking life? Often means a desire to improve current conditions. A need to get out of a undesireable situation.

Fleeing/Chased/Running: Running from an issue. What or who are you avoiding right now? The message of this dream is “stop running, the more you run from this issue the longer it will last.”

Friend/Friends: If it is not a real person but just a friend in the dream, then it symbolizes a part of yourself that you like, a quality within you that is being helpful to you in your life right now. Our dreams will show us the different parts of our PERSONality in the form of a person so we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Hell/Hail: May symbolize a very difficult time you are having to go through. Fears, anxieties, feeling trapped. An evil force.

Path/Trail/Pathway: A path or direction you have chosen to take in life. The condition of the path reflects the ease or the difficulty this path in life has been for you. Are you following someone elses path or are you paving your own?

Road/Street: The road of life. The path you have chosen. The type of road and condition of the road will reflect how your journey is going right now.

Running: Do you need to pick up the pace somewhere in your life? Are you trying to keep up?Things may be going too fast. Slow down. If you are running from something then you are probably avoiding something or someone in your waking life.

Storm/Stormy: A stormy situation. An emotional outburst. Anger.

Wait/Waiting/Waited: To have to wait in a dream means you are growing impatient in waking life. What is taking a long time in your life? your dream may be telling you that now is not the time. “All good things come to those who wait.”

Outside/Out: The outside in a dream often refers to getting something out in the open.

Tornado/Tornados/Cyclone: Tornados in a dream almost always point to worry and anxiety. What are you worried about right now? What is causing your emotions to spin out of control? Is there something going on that you are worried you can not control? If you dream of tornadoes often, it is a good indication you are a proud card-carrying member of the worry wart club! these dreams are a wake up call to calm down, relax and “let go and let God…”

See: If you can’t see in your dream then there is something in waking life you aren’t seeing for what it really is or you are turning a blind eye toward something.

Breathe/Breathing: If you are unable to breathe in a dream, then ask yourself how you might be “holding your breath” in waking life. In other words, is there something you are waiting for that might not happen?

Not being able to breathe in a dream may also mean that you are feeling suffocated in waking life. Perhaps there is too much going on, too many issues or too many responsibilities that you have no room to breath. You should also ask yourself if you are in a relationship that is suffocating you.

City/Town/Village: A city or town is an “area” of the world, therefore it will represent some “area” of your life.

If there is something disturbing about the town or city, ask yourself what area of your life has been bothering you. Is it your past? Whatever area it is, your dream is alerting you to the fact that you need to correct it.

Green jello, this is absolutely amazing… thank you so much for sharing!

It is not just that you dream amazing dreams. It is that you are an amazing writer. My goodness! I have felt the very same way about some folks in the waiting rooms of hospitals….

And you described both feeling and thought so accurately.

You are a master of the written word. You are totally amazing.

THANK YOU for sharing.

I had recurring tornado dreams when I moved from a midwestern house with a basement to a southeastern coast house with a crawl space. Not very poetic, just practical, I’m afraid.
