Welcome to my shopping game that I hope will partially fill the hole left behind in many of our formerly shopping-oriented lives. I believe you may find this exercise to be superior to mere window shopping. And if you fall off the wagon and literally buy something, not to worry. Tell us about that too, so others can catch a bit of the thrill while you were at it. And remember, you’re helping the economy!
To play, please grab the What I’m Not Buying this Weekend badge, located in my sidebar, or just usethis link. Then leave a link to your post about a recent shopping experience in the comments and I’ll add you to the list in this post.
Technology is very rude to me and I do NOT deserve it. No one does. Therefore today I claim my power to NOT buy the latest and greatest of what’s available in the technology marketplace. I am NOT going to spend another second talking to a guy in India, trying to fix a problem that apparently can’t be solved after 300 straight hours over the phone. Nor am I going to search for receipts from Circuit City (which now would be useless anyway since they went bankrupt) for purchases for awesome techno high stylin’ life bling made in China that is now total crap.
In quick sucession, I am going to go out and NOT buy the following.
iPhone application: “Are you a complete idiot? What about your friends, coworkers, and family? Buy The Moron Test on sale now for only 99 cents (normally $2.99) at the
iPhone App Store.
What’s that? You do NOT have an iPhone?
ME NEITHER! Next on the list:
A 3G Apple iPhone for depending on who you talk to, around $400 plus $30 monthly service with AT&T. Does it bother me, someone who is NOT a tightwad that I can’t get a straight answer from anyone about how much it cost? Absolutely NOT.
Take that, cell phone made by a certain company that is also named after a fruit. Just because I drop ya a couple of times does not mean you and your little hourglass thingie can slow down to something that is slower than my own brain!
Is it just me, or after a couple of years do the images taken with a digital camera not have the same sharpness they once did? Maybe I dropped my camera too, and it started in with this behavior (yes, gadgets either behave, or they don’t – just like humans). But I didn’t drop it. And my pictures still aren’t reflecting the jaw dropping awesomeness that I imagine when I look through the viewfinder and press the button and the camera makes that fake digital noise meant to resemble a real, mechanical click.
Nor am I going to hire a camera geek who could not pass the above moron test to provide necessary training to learn to take a picture before my kids are in college.
And just because I want it, I’m NOT buying this:
Kindle 2 $359 at Amazon. While I’m there, because I can, and do NOT like making decisions that might lead to buyer’s remorse, I am also NOT pre-ordering the Kindle in it’s next incarnation for $489.
Because I’m opinionated as all get out, I must note here that I will NOT buy them, until Amazon works out some kind of way for Kindle owners to share their books and for Kindle books to be available at libraries. Wow, I’m kinda liking this getting all self righteous business. It is so easy when NOT buying! I do NOT like it when companies are clearly going for monopolies that will ultimately change things that much. Is it not enough that readers are giving up ink and paper? Many readers like sharing books even more than they like the smell of paper.
But for now I assume this is NOT an issue.

I would total these up for you, but I do NOT have to. My best guess estimate is several thousands of dollars once all the service plans and agreements are added.
Good times, this NOT shopping!
How about you? What are you not buying recently? Or how about something you did buy?
Something is up with Mr. Linky so for today, please just leave a comment with your link and I’ll add it here. Visit these participants to see what other’s are NOT buying.

A friend of mine recently received a Kindle as a birthday gift. She loves it. I’m trying not to listen
).
Aaah, the simple life of a goat. No technology necessary. Now the publicist; she still cannot properly work her Cannon Rebel Camera. It frustrates her. She has to run to the male person to get the flash to not flash. Nor can she properly work her photoshop elements. Sometimes she wishes she was a goat…..
I have to admit, while I recognize the validity of all your arguments against, that I, gulp, have and love my kindle.
But I’ve never taken it to the beach…:)
Moi, I really, really do (NOT?) want one.
Pricilla, I used to like mechanical stuff where one didn’t even consider reading one word in the owner’s manual. Everything seems to need a class or training now.
Vic, it’s really easy to get all morally superior when not buying. It’s a new feeling for me
speaking of talking to India, my husband is retired phoneman (BellSouth/AT&T). A friend e-mailed him an actual photo of the telephone system in India. You would flip at the chaos in the phone lines! So, good choices in what not to buy. India is not worth admiration or to be emulated.
Have a great weekend pal!
Today I’m not buying a laptop even though this one is virused to the point of quarantine.
Off to check out your new blog!

Never mind…I thought you were just being fancy with “moi”
Its a cool blog, nonetheless.

Funny – i’m not buying one of those fancy new digital cameras, either! i found one at a going-out-of-business sale and then decided not to buy it anyway. Not buying books either. Library! library!
I don’t get the electronic book business. Give me a paperback that I can carry anywhere and that won’t fritz out on me just when it starts getting good.
Ann, I’m pretty sure every computer in our house has lethal, slow killing virus. Software says we don’t anymore, but I don’t believe in software. Good luck with that
Oh, and I’ve kind of wondered about my friend, “moi’s” name. I think people may also think I have a clothing swap blog because of her and Heather Cherry’s widget in my sidebar. If only I had as much style as “moi” and Heather
Girlnextdoor, I’ve been trying to use the library more, but our local library never seems to have what I want… at least I can check on line. I’m big on Amazon used books these days. Humm, maybe a used camera? Probably not the best idea
phdyogurt, I hadn’t thought about the fritz out quotient. Since I did not buy a Kindle, I assume they work perfectly, even though no electronic before them ever has!
Oh, sorry I almost missed my pal Sparky! My husband travels to India several times a year and the stories he tells me… Slumdog Millionaire in general, is more what it’s all about that any Eat, Pray and Love scenario. It used to be the worst for hearing from him… went for days. Now it seems phone service to India has improved. Hope you’re having a good weekend.
I absolutely totally and utterly enjoy your “what I’m not buying this weekend.” It is SO cool. And you are SO like me in your choices. (grin)
Ha ha! I just wrote my post for your meme this Sat:) I’m going to have a blast with this new blog!
