What I'm Not Buying this Weekend #8

When planning vacations I am a sensible girl. Depending on where I am planning to visit, exchange rates, weather, tide charts, sunrise and sunset times, and/or cost of emeralds must be considered. Sometimes I undertake these research projects months ahead of time. Other times these kinds of things are not even thought of until I am on the tarmac. Sometimes traveling without knowing what’s going to happen from hour to hour is just what the chronic over-thinker needs. Let go and Let Frommer.

My husband has wised up to the fact that a certain percentage of what I determine a trip will cost must be added to airfare, lodging and rental car. I’m not talking about taxes. I’m talking about something that in even more certain:

WARDROBE

Seriously, what’s the point of going on a ski trip without the perfect apres ski wear? Or visiting the Vatican without the perfect pashmina to cover up exposed shoulders? And how about the perfect shoes to take you from people watching over croissants and coffee, to cocktails without resorting to anything that looks too sensible? (If cocktails start at breakfast, this isn’t a big deal – and what a perfect time for a first pair of Christian Louboutins!)

Except for the sensible shoes that don’t look too sensible, I wouldn’t know. Not big on skiing. Never been to the Vatican or owned a pair of Louboutins. My point is this: There is no point in traveling at all without the right clothes.

So I had fun NOT buying at Not Shopping Nirvana again this week. I learned you can clip pictures from pretty much anywhere. I will NOT be wearing these things on my next vacation:

Guess Where I AM Going

I won’t be driving a Mini Cooper either. However, anything that is consumable WILL definitely be consumed. And that lovely chateau? I will really stay there.

In a little over a month, my husband and I are going away without our daughters for the first time in a couple of years. You may know that my husband has a fairly exciting travel life through his work and frankly, I’m consumed with avocado green envy 90 percent of the time. Where would you rather be? The Taj Mahal, or Bi-lo? The Musee D’Orsay, or the childrens’ museum?

You could say my existence is mostly one big staycation. But I hate that stupid word. One big groundhog day, maybe.

So can you figure out where I am going on our trip? Really, I am going for real. I can’t believe it either.

You know in social studies how the kiddies learn “world, continent, country, state, county, city, home?” Whoever can pinpoint where I’m going first will win something:
Let me know in the comments where you think I am going on vacation. The first person to figure it out EXACTLY, and tell me in the comments, will get a present that smells of a certain purple flower from this place. And if the first or second person gets it, please comment anyway. I’ll send you a postcard if you want me to. I’ve become a real collector, you know.

Which reminds me….

I’m not getting the critical mass here with participation. I’m choosing to blame SATURDAYS. We all have many other things to NOT do on Saturdays.

So I’m moving this popsicle stand to MONDAYS. The next What I’m Not Buying will be on MONDAY, June 22.

What are you buying or not this weekend? Don’t you think I should really buy that dress and the two pairs of sensible shoes?

To play, please grab the What I’m Not Buying this Weekend badge, located in my sidebar, or just use this link. Then leave a link to your post about a recent shopping experience with Mr. Linky, or tell about it in the comments.

    Ha!!!!!!!!!

Do you know what? I'll be in the states visiting my Mom when you're in France!!! I can't believe it!

Sensible shoes.. CONVERSE low tops.. they are all the rage:) They are comfortable, hip, and they won't automatically brand you as a tourist:) We should talk on the phone about STUFF while you're packing!

    PS. My post is up!

  • Luberon! En Provence! Voila! Mais oui????

  • uhhh….converse which are dark colored. NO white shoes. too american. a scarf for your neck, tres necessaire. also for dave's. all the men in france had neck scarves when I was there.

  • Leslie, you're the closest, but I think with a little work you can do better.

Marie,I'll be drinking chateauneuf des papes from there but I think that's one department over :) I'll be there 7/18 – 7/26! Do you use skype?

  • I am bright green with envy. I love that area and haven't been in 5 years. Buy lavender oil for presents to bring back.

Perhaps one pair of gladiator flat sandals. I bought one in bronze and they go with everything. Also a simple black sundress. You can add earrings and the shoes to dress it up at night and your Converse (good suggestion) by day.

Sample lots of wine. Try lavender creme brulee.

btw…I enjoy your blog. Go to my blog to the 2nd post and pick up your award.

  • Wow, that will be an amazing trip!

I blame it on Saturdays, too. Although, I usually prepare mine way in advance and then auto-publish on Saturday mornings.

  • Darn! My guess is Provence too! A little late!
You are going to have a great time!
    :) robin
    cinnamon & honey

  • provence is right… but I want details!

  • i don't know where you're going but i wish my family and i were going on vacation too :)

  • YAY monday is a better day for me! I'll try to remember! Sounds like france to me!

  • Leslie got it down to the street address and the web address! She posted over on facebook. If you click on polyvore and scroll down, there's a link to the apartment where we will be staying. Yea Leslie!

the place we are staying in France is in a town called Apt in the Luberon part of Provence! http://www.lamadone.net/

  • What a great trip you're going to have. Make sure to visit the cavaillon market and have some of the melon. . . you might never leave. In St Remy it's possible to visit the asylum where Van Gogh stayed and stand in the exact spots where he did some of his paintings. It is an incredible feeling – sad and wonderful. Take 10 million pictures and post them all. . . please.

  • I'm gonna guess Fredericksburg, Texas. That's a lavender farm photo and they have Texas sized lavender farms there.

Want my mailing address now?? ROFLOL!!

Have fun gal. Let us know when you're gone & return so we won't worry about y'all. :o ) xx

  • Here via the Peach Tart. Provence? Have fun! What a great trip.

  • Hey, have a wonderful trip. I'd rather be sipping champagne on the Champs d'Elysees than taking the kids to the mall, too.

  • Provence?

  • Margo:
Moving this meme to Monday is Ok, but wahta bout Friday? Anticipating what we are not buying. :-)

  • Will pretend I got to go along by visiting Albuquerque's Los Poblanos lavender farm and
    Casa Rodeno Winery

  • The next What I'm Not Buying with be on Monday, June 22. Thank you all for stopping by, playing and/or guessing. Leslie, from Atlanta and a acupuncturist/herbalist (I had to get that in, because I think that's so cool) wins, with my impulsive stab at a giveaway. I've got a plan for a less impulsive giveaway for when I move to a new web design in the near future (not sure what that means yet), but my favorite shop here in town is contributing something that I'm really excited about!

  • Aix-en-Provence?

This should be emblazoned on a tee shirt: "There is no point in traveling at all without the right clothes."

    You got it, babe.

    Have a simply smashing time.

  • I’m late as usual… but are you going to the Rhône wine region or is it perhaps Aix-en-Provence??? Wherever the destination will be, I hope you fully enjoy every moment, and let go of all restraint. Live it up, girl!
    Ciao and bon voyage!

    Lola xx
