Dis-Moi, Am I Lost in Translation?

by Margo on August 2, 2009

At the Virgin record store in Nice Airport, I approached the cashier with a hastily chosen CD of French songs for my teenage daughters. I was pretty sure it was going to be full of songs by the French equivalents of Clay Aiken and Neil Diamond. I had tried to get a clue while listening to the radio for the past couple of weeks as we roamed around France, but it was hard to find anything that wasn’t by Michael Jackson.

I reasoned that at least I would be giving my teenage daughters one more reason to think I’m old, and hopeless, and all things mothers are destined to become in their teenage daughters’ eyes. Perhaps they could share the CD with their French class and bond with their classmates by scoffing at their mother’s oldness and hopelessness. As much as I hate the fact that I have long crossed over into the “uncool,” what I detest most, is that I’ve just come to recognize it.

Ignorance truly is bliss sometimes.

As I discussed my choice with the cashier I became aware of a  French teenage girl looking over my shoulder.  So began my final Rosetta Stone moment of the trip.

Je puis vous aider ?” (can I help you?) she asked.

Ce serait grand. Pouvez-vous m’aider à choisir une musique pour mes filles adolescente ?” (That would be great! Can  you help me choose some music for my teenage daughters?) This may not have been what I said exactly, but like a newly immigrated NYC taxi cab driver, I only can claim that I  made myself perfectly understood.

The French teen put her hand on my shoulder and guided me towards the merchandise. I got the feeling I reminded her of her grandmother. I didn’t get mad at her assumption because, yeah… we’re talking about my own convoluted projection here.

Que musique font elles aiment ?” (What kind of music do they like?)

Again, this is kinda what I said. Yeah, I made myself  understood.  If I were in a French language lesson video this would be it EXACTLY:

Elles aiment toutes les sortes de musique, sauf le pan, le club ou la musique de disco. (They like all kinds of music except not pop, club or disco music.) Leurs préférés sont la musique classique et le rock. (They prefer classical music and rock.)

Fortunately “rock” is one of those universal words like “telephone”, “jogging” or “minibar”.  If I had said “la musique de la roche,” (music of the rock) I’m pretty sure I would have at least gotten a good laugh out of her.

After telling her that the long list of my daughters’ favorite bands include “U2″, “Coldplay”,  and “Muse,” she guided me to a CD by the very cute, BB Brunes. Here is one of the songs, Dis-Moi.

One of the lines, “Une légère envie de violence quand elle relace ses bas,” translates via an online translator to “a slight zest for violence when she re-laces up her bottoms”  If “bas” is a typo and is supposed to be “bras” or arms“, then it could mean “a slight zest for violence as she takes back her arms.” Both are a bit odd, but I’m sure it’s  a colloquialism. Anyone?

Or perhaps girls who have a zest for violence often take back their arms these days? Or this re-lacing up of bottoms is a new trend?

Remember, dans les yeux de mes filles, je suis vieux. Très, très vieux. Et désespéré. (In the eyes of my daughters, I am old. Very, very old. And hopeless.)

I say: Qui se soucie ? (Who cares?)

I don’t speak an ounce of French, but I liked this song and the video. What does Dis-Moi mean?

Okay, this is just TOO cool! One of the benefits of being bilingual is getting to share in the real stuff like this. If I had gone into the store and spoken in English (don’t know a word of French) she would have handed me a Jerry Lewis comedy record. :)

Hey, you brought them a present. When my dad went to France all he brought me was a big whomping bottle of Joy.

Boy did I hate that….not. I still use the stuff today. But I am old like you.

I have been studying Spanish for 7 months now and I wish I could be as clear as you are. Did you study in French college?

I find it always nice and refreshing to discover new bands and music. I think you did well, this is song has a happy, upbeat vibe to it (even though I don’t know what they’re saying!) :-)

Sparky, please say that’s true :)

blueviolet, I hear ya. I’m very thankful my kids don’t like pop music because it physically makes me ill. some of their music is pretty good, but they like a lot more volume since they haven’t yet damaged their eardrums at a Van Halen concert.

Thom, glad you liked it – it is kinda catchy ;)

Marites, yes, quite the eye candy. Want to lock daughters in convent now!

phd yogurtry, toujours is right :)

diane, glad you liked it! Music is like an international language – no need to know what the heck they’re saying :)

Peach Tart, I got girls to put it on my itunes too. I’ve been listening all day – still don’t know what they’re saying :)

Robin, it’s always amazing to me how far a little effort
goes. Usually what happens as the conversation goes along is they’ll speak in French and I end up speaking in English – understanding is easier than speaking.

Pricilla, One can never have too much joy if you ask me :)

Jessica, you probably know more than you think. I only had two years in college, but my husband and I lived in the northern part of France for a year – I had a tutor and and watched a lot of French Sesame Street and dubbed Dynasty. And I pretty much only speak in the present tense – making me wonder why there are so many.

Annette, they liked it! They still think I’m old though :)

mother, it’s like holding breath to go under water… just do it. For a big wuss, I’m pretty brave in this area :)

Laurie, thanks! I hope your work and summer are going well!

Eric, the only thing I know how to say in Italian (and had to look up to spell) is “La cucina è stata eccellente.” which I think means “the cooking was excellent” – but maybe I’ve been making big idiot of self and really saying “the kitchen summer excellent”… sounds like potential lyrics to me :)

Jori, oh yes, they will someday! I was a big pain in the rear myself, and I’m sure my mother can’t help but enjoy the state of things just a little right now :)

just randomly came across this site but thought i’d share what the “Une légère envie de violence quand elle relace ses bas” means… a slight desire for violence when she (re-)pulls up her tights.
