Macro Monday #1 – Lavender Feast

In general, I don’t like insects. This one was okay because at least at this moment he had no interest in bothering humans. I have no idea what kind of bug he is. Any entomologists out there want to clue me in?

I took this photo two weeks ago in a lavender field near Gordes in Provence, France. He was huge! His body was probably about 3 inches long. At first I thought he was one of the cicadas that loudly make themselves known in the region. (When we were driving from the airport, we could hear the cicada symphony with the windows rolled up and the air-conditioning on.)
The back of his head looks like a face with a goofy smile on it – as if there is nothing better to be than a giant green bug in France, whiling away the day nursing in the lavender fields. If I knew how to do Photoshop, I think it would be fun to give him a beret and tuck a baguette under one of his legs.

OMG! First of all, what a fantastic closeup and secondly, what a fantastic bug find! I have no idea what he is Margo, but I’d think of entering that photo in some kind of contest if I were you; it’s got to be unusual enough to win something!

Wow – I can appreciate that it’s a good photograph, but I’m so averse to bugs that I honestly can’t look at it very long without getting the heeby geebies. I could never take a photo of a bug, no matter how interesting looking others may find it – because it’s instinctual – I see a bug, I run the other direction. Screaming. It’s kind of embarrassing, really, but that’s just me.

how did you get this close and not have it fly away? are you a bug whisperer?

He is awesome! He reminds me of a grasshopper/katydid/cicada all wrapped up into one bug!

He’s definitely different! But he looks so jolly with that little smile….how bizarre!

Not only does he have that big, fake grin, but if you look under the grin, it looks like he’s wearing a tiny little tie.
I thought this was a photoshop job at first. I think you’re right, though; his ensemble isn’t complete without a beret and a baguette. Oh ho ho ho ho ho!

Wow! That is so cool!! It really does look like he’s grinning. He almost looks like he’s singing Broadway
First of all love the photo. And, I’m jealous you were in France. Thank you for the wonderful comment on my site. I’m working on a follow up post today. Hopefully, will have it up later.

Lots of bug shots this week, and this one is stunning! That is one weird-looking bug…and I love your little narrative to go along with the shot!

I enjoy looking at bugs, just don’t want them on me. [giggle] Even though the trip was fun I’ll bet you’re glad to be home. My husband, who is good at identifying such things, thinks it “could be” a Katydid. Let us know if that’s correct.

Aw, he looks like he’s got a smiley face on the back of his head. Awesome photo.
So not a bug person.

Let me say in advance that I know I am anthropomorphizing. That said, the bug( whatever he is) looks happy. Even without the beret( which would be adorable), I do see him as one of those old men you see in the markets in France. As you say, a baguette in one arm and a bunch of flowers in the other. Now comes the advantage of being a bug, he might have an extra arm to put the wine in.

Saw so many of these when we had our lavender farm in the Haute des Bas Alpes. My ‘Guide du Promenuer dans la Nature’ says that he is a Sauterelle, but shows him with wings. JP says there are so many types of Crickets and is sure that is what it is. Whatever he is he is a funny fellow and lends himself perfectly to Beret and string of onions. Worthy picture for todays POTD.
thanks for all the comments to all and moannie! – thanks for the information – I was wondering about the wings. xxx ooo
Congrats on POTD Contender Margo! I knew this post was a winner when I nominated you to David!

Fun shot! You really can’t tell which direction he’s looking (even though you know he’s feasting on the lavender). A beret and a baguette would be perfect! Congratulations on your POTD mention!
tight pic…fun to sit and watch them in their world. congrats on the POTD mention over at David’s.
great shot and he really seem to have 2 faces
That is an amazing photograph. For a second there I thought it looked like Kermet the frog.

I thought it looked like that too. A big goofy smile and he’s wearing a bib. It’s creepy and icky because I hate bugs but yet, there’s a beauty in it too (as long as it’s by way of your picture and not touching me.)
awesome photo. i don’t do bugs either, but macros of bugs are pretty cool. even butterflies, which i hate.
i took my first bug photo last month of a bee. it’s not worth posting anywhere.
