Macro Monday/Chasing Butterflies

“Life forms illogical patterns. It is haphazard and full of beauties which I try to catch as they fly by, for who knows whether any of them will ever return?”
-Margot Fonteyn

butterfly hiding

I spent an hour this morning chasing butterflies.

Holding onto moments both perfect and not.

When he doesn’t catch me, an intruder, making a spectacle out of him.

and miserably begging for extra seconds

but he is what he is,

and butterflies, him included, never  sit still.

And like a few people I know, a little shy,

mostly working solo.

The smallest change in the make up of his one act play,

whether it be a hornet, another butterfly, or Lily the Labradoodle charging us with a big stick.

chasing butterflies

will make him flee.

or hide.

or circle from a safe distance

evaluating, returning for a moment, just when he believed I had given up

chasing butterflies

Then, with thrash of wings, gone

(who was the first poet to speak of thrashing wings, anyway?

Does it matter?)

Butterflies are very hard to catch. Very elusive. I like all your photos. Is there anything better to do with a day than to chase butterflies!!

Beautiful pictures, Margo! I love macro photography. I use that setting on my camera (I’m such an amateur) more than any other. Although I’ve found it’s best to keep the camera away from my hideous feet .

(I still want to pick your brain a little bit, when I get a second. I’ll email you and see what works for you – I so appreciate it!)

Delightfully written and beautifully photographed post.
Chasing butterflies is way better than my confrontation with thousands of migrating red butterflies last week as I drove over the Cascade Mountains to Bend. It was a horrible slaughter. I dodged the ones I could when there wasn’t a car coming toward me on the two-lane highway. I kept praying for them to fly higher, and many did I am sure, but others were obliterated in the middle of their beautiful sunny day flying in the forest corridor.

17 EG wow August 25, 2009 at 10:03 am

Catching butterflies with your camera is no easy task. I’m not surprised you were chasing around for a hour. But in the end you won!
