I live in an old house and hear noises all the time. I always hear footsteps on the steps between 1 and 2 AM if I am up...it's kinda creepy.

Hi - I just stumbled upon your site today and love it. I think that bike IS the perfect form of transportation too. And I was sucked into your post so quickly - I have been so terrified like that before. It's the pits. So glad it was 'just' your daughter!!!

This sounds like something that would happen to me. I've had quite a few "is it a ghost?" experiences. Once a really loud booming noise (that sounded like it was coming from upstairs) caused my then-roommate and I enough concern to go "investigate." I brought a steak knife. We checked every room and ended in the one that had a door leading out to the deck. Suddenly the door started violently rattling and I had one of those movie reactions that looks so fake on screen. I was literally frozen in place with the exception of my hand that was shaking to hard that I would have dropped the knife (that is, if I wasn't holding it out in front of me in death grip). After a few seconds (which of course felt like minutes - the cliches never end!), I was able to make my legs work and turned to see my roommate disappearing down the stairs. I quickly followed and we ended up outside in the cold winter night wearing pjs with no shoes or socks (I even had wet hair in a towel). After circling the house, looking for the intruder trying to break in, we gathered enough courage to sneak in and make a phone call to her cousin who lived nearby. He helped us search the house and confirm that there wasn't anyone there but us. We did eventually figure out what the crashing sound was. The boiler was about to explode - so it was making big booming noises. As for the door, I can only assume that wind rattled the screen door which may not have been properly latched. Or maybe it was a ghost...you never know...

I get scared too when I am home alone. The littlest noises make the cats and I sit up to perk up our ears.

LOVE the big old house. Just gorgeous.

I was on pins and needles! You're a really good writer.

And I want to LIVE in that photo. Wow, what a beautiful place.

Lin, I feel that way a lot about the babes lately!

Sheri, Do you simulataneously want to hug/choke too? I think we've got ourselves a club!

Eric, it was - I didn't want to leave there either!

Pricilla, you goats are worse than my daughters :)

Sparky, the funny thing was, when
Dolly got home and I told her and then asked her why she didn't tell me on the phone that Sparkle was there at home with me - she just kind of shrugged her shoulders as if to say "oh, well" and walked away. I am hopeful that the aliens who snatched her recently will return her in a few years.

The Mother, Thanks! and for all your visits!

Thom, I should put the gb's on speed dial. I love that photo too. It makes me smile.

Natural, hammocks always do look inviting, don't they. If it just weren't for the heat, the rope marks on the back of thighs and the lack of a cocktail delivery person :) But I'm not complaining.

Susie, Glad you liked it! You would know :)

Jane, up side the head always sounds right, but I would like to know how to implement. PS - I think I passed near you on I-95 - I thought about you :)

Great post, could feel your anxiety and would definitely have knocked Sparkle "up side the head" as my daddy used to say.

Also love your new (?) bio!
