Postcard for a Girl Named Marie

Didn’t I mention that I’d started a postcard collection? I’m sure I did, because I remember saying that I blame Marie, the lovely host of Postcard Friendship Friday.

Besides re-uniting me with my friend, Ebay, my new hobby gave me something to shop for besides soap and cheese at the Aix en Provence market while on vacation this summer.

I didn’t find this postcard vendor until late in the morning when many of the vendors were starting to close. Instead of walking away with nothing as I am prone to do when in a hurry, I managed to select a few cards.  I could have spent hours going through his stock.

My husband and I not only now blame Marie, but thank her from the bottom of our hearts.  If you look closely you can see that to the left of the vendor’s head, there is a Hermes store in the background.  My new hobby kept both me and the hubby out of there.

To be honest I really just like looking in the windows at stores like Hermes anyway. Whenever I start doing this, my husband aggressively avoids eye contact by suddenly becoming very interested in variegated roof lines.  I can spend way too much time studying silk scarves and $400 corkscrews, contemplating society and the economy, and thinking I’m some kind of post modern suburban existentialist. So at least postcard shopping kept me from doing that.

The card pictured above was one that caught my eye as I thumbed through his cards. I think I recognize her from some postcards I have seen posted by several others here on PFF. Who is this mystery woman?

The handwriting on the back  fascinated me. It is so artful and different from anything I’m used to reading. From what I can gather it was sent to “Marie Louise Avon” from “Emile” or “Emily”.  I’m not sure if it is in celebration of Marie Louise’s birthday, or in honor of  Ste. Louise’s feast day  in the Catholic church.

Perhaps Ste. Louise, who lived in the 17th century and canonized in 1934, really liked the color pink. There is so much of it on this card that I wonder if the use of pink has any significance. I’ve never seen one of these colored cards except in photos. The strokes make it almost look as if someone used multicolored highlighters to color it.  Why the heck do I wonder about such stupid stuff?

In 1960, Saint Louise was declared the patroness of social work.  The woman on this card looks as if she would rather window shop at Hermes than build orphanages, but we all know looks can be deceiving. Besides it wouldn’t be France without Hermes, postcard vendors and obscure female saints.

Happy PFF! For more postcards from around the world, be sure to visit Marie.

That is such a fun thing to collect – I love the image on the one you showed us. And I agree – what interesting and beautiful handwriting. I just love France too!

This card is so colorful! What a great find. I loved the stamp on the front. Hermes and scarves … you are a strong woman to stay out of the store. I applaud you. :D :D

Why don’t they make cool post-cards anymore. They are all tacky with pictures of your ocean front hotel in Myrtle Beach. I love the openness of post cards. Imagining all the bored postal people reading it along its journey. It is like naked writing.

What a great find! I always find the French postcard sellers a little intimidating. :) You seem to be expected to know what you’re looking for, and I prefer to have a good indiscriminate rummage.

Who says you can’t build orphanages and look good at the same time? This is a gorgeous card.

Do you think there is a big market for that here in the States? I mean, really cool old ones? Where would you find a dealer–at a flea market or antique store?? And where do you display your collection? I could sit there for hours too!

What a lovely idea to collect postcards. I would not have thought of it ever. They do add historical and cultural facts for us to appreciate.

Beautiful card! I hope you are enjoying your new hobby! I’ve always collected postcards off and on, but thanks to Marie I do it very frequently now! Isn’t it great?

I love this idea of collecting old postcards. I have every single post card that has been sent to me. Yep, it is a huge collection of 12!
I love the coloring on the front of this one and that handwriting is so beautiful…makes my penmanship look as though my dog writes my letters for me.

Those old French postcards are pretty and so different from American ones (though most of those actually came from Germany).

thanks for the info! Can you tell about what year this card is from?

I love flea market.
But I don’t find the type of flea market that you have in your area there here (in Malaysia).

It always surprises me the family treasure people “trash”. I would love to have postcards from family members of generations past. But at least these have been saved and will be treasured by collectors like you.

I really wish I had great handwriting… Mine is so messy – which is probably due to the fact that I refused to learn to hold my pen correctly and basically write with my fist. So ladylike…

I could look for hours at old postcards, but since I already spend way too many hours looking at old paper, I’ve little time to look at the view side of cards. PFF gives me an excuse!

I missed PFF this week! (sniff) We’re so busy getting my parents place ready for them to return home after their accident that I haven’t been online that much. They go home Sunday the 20th. Then I’m back!

In the meantime–this was a wonderful post! Beautiful postcard! I love Marie, too–she’s been an inspiration to me.
