The Remarkable and Unremarkable ME ME

by Margo on October 11, 2009

I don’t like the word “meme.” First of all it I just learned it is pronounced like “cream,” and I think that sounds kind of creepy. Having only been exposed to the written word “meme,” since I began blogging less than a year ago. I thought meme was two syllables and pronounced, MEE MEE, or MeeMAY or MayME all of which sound cute, goofy and incredibly self focused. In blogging or any first person writing, do we really want to call any more attention to how incredibly self focused we are? Even though we are? Humm… let ME ME think about that.

So I will call these two memes something else. I just don’t know what. One was given to me upon my request from the lovely Joanna at The Fifty Factor. She sent ME ME five words to write about. In my own writing, I use this technique often for brainstorming. Sometimes I write in full sentences, and sometimes I just do a form of map minding, using list of phrases and words and see what happens. It can be a big old mess of feelings, a paragraph of prose, generalities, details, snippets of dialogue – whatever works for you at the time. If you’re in a hurry, it can also be a great way to journal. Here you go:

Suburbs: Contained, orderly, symmetrical, closed garage doors, know people’s pets, shiny cars with darkened windows, perky cul de sacs, trash day, no sidewalks, purple and orange Halloween lights, settled, overgrown shrubbery, few hardwood trees – only skinny Loblolly pines, smells piney after rain, azaleas – stunning for 3 weeks in April, mowed and edged, curb appeal, Southern, gentrified, traditional, homogenous, private,

Laughter: essential, elusive, unplanned, uncontrollable, spiritual, family, life, spark like from a match, explosive energy, sometimes I can’t find it when I should be able to, sometimes find it when least expected , puckish, I become asthmatic when taken too extremes, gives me hiccups when combined with carbonated beverages, childlike but not childish

Lifestyle: label or box, relaxed, rebellious, different, introverted yet gregarious, quiet yet energetic, ground hog day, mundane, interior, exciting, different than expected

Parenting: amazing, exhilarating, depressing, creative, happy, sad, painful, hilarious, emotional, one shot at getting it right, lots of ways to do it right, individual, loud, messy, busy, always changing, important, fast

Confident: meaning, hopeful, belief, peace, indifferent to opinions but not feelings of others, a journey, fluctuating, can be evasive and then suddenly come from unexpected places, my husband – always, myself on many days, difficult on most days, strut or slump

This second  (*shudder*) comes from Snap, one of my best new blogging friends at Tales from Twisty Lane. The very cool award she gave me is over in the sidebar. This exercise was really fun and I’m glad I did it.

The directions are: Copy and change the answers to suit you and pass it on. It’s quite tricky to use only one word answers!  (so tricky, that I couldn’t do it)

lifestyle “ground hog day” .. hmmm. you’ve got me stumped.

I love your 5 words cream meme. (ewww)
Your One word answers are great, that would be tough to do.
Congrats on your Bono award, that really was an incredible post, but really, everything you write I find amazing!!!

I always thought it was pronounced like “them.” Maybe because I took French in high school? Meme in French means “same” so I thought it was some play on everyone doing the same thing. Then my brother told me the true derivitive which was apparently a bit of a snore since I don’t remember anything about it.

I liked your five words. That would be a hard one to do…

Ce n’est pas la meme chose! It was a disconnect. Maybe I should use “meme” as one of the 5 words for somebody?

I’ve always pronounced meme the way it’s supposed to be I guess, but I never really knew either.

I really enjoyed your brainstorming on those 5 words.

Hmmm these look very interesting :) I’ve been tagged with that Five Word before. I’m with you on meme I don’t know still how to pronounce it cuz it looks like me me and I only know one way to say it. Anyway, it’s not a pretty word LOL

WOW! That’s a lot of work! That brain of yours is always going click, click, click… Laughing at “meme”. Never thought of it that way, now I’ll not be able to stop!

Still always snicker every time I read the word Labradoodle.

Evolutionary biologists, of course, mean something very different when they talk about memes. It took me a while to figure out what bloggers were talking about.

Well done! I really like how you tackled the five words. It’s fun learning more about blogging friends.

Great meme, or MeMe. It’s all about getting to know each other, right?

Your rocked those five words Margo. Thanks for playing along!!!

And your one word answers were terrific too.

xo

14 Unknown Mami October 12, 2009 at 1:12 am

I thought it was Me Me when I first saw it too, but I had seen Wayne Dyer on PBS speak of memes, “ideas that propagate”.

I don’t know what my issue is with this word, but even just imagining Wayne Dyer saying it is giving me the creeps this morning!

16 Jen October 12, 2009 at 6:59 am

I wondered what meme was. I though it was

ME….ME

which sounds like ME, lol

Sounds like fun, do I make up my own 5 words?

Awww, you have a labradoodle? I’m jealous. I want a goldendoodle but my cat disagrees. He’s a party pooper.

You’re too funny! I hate the words meme too, but sometimes they’re fun to jump into. :) I learned tons about you from this one/two. :)

20 The Lawyer Mom October 13, 2009 at 7:17 pm

Girl, I’m still trying to find the technical definition of meme. I know it’s “cream” but it sure feels ME ME to me. The first time I got one, I didn’t now quite what to do.

So you’re from Richmond, eh? Any chance you’re a Randy-Mac girl?

These non-memes seem like a cross between speed dating and Rorschach tests. I like it!

And pssssttt…sometimes I feel like my life is living a perpetual Groundhog Day, too…
