First thing this morning I was in a pissy mood. There’s the rain, torrents of it. Then along with that comes a really bad hair day. Then there was Lily the Labradoodle tracking mud and water all over the house, and looking much more thrilled about it than she should, if you ask me. And as always the ringing phone, a mountain of laundry and the writing.
If I were to show you a picture of how I felt, I might have shown you the one above. In my tortured state of suburban angst, I would be hopelessly locked on this side of life; the side that is a little grey and boring. I would be annoyed and more than a little covetous, all because of what I only thought I could see through the slats.
Then I remembered today, November 11 is Veterans Day.
To the over 20 million living US veterans, I sincerely thank you for giving us the privilege of living in a country where we are often allowed to forget that freedom isn’t free.

It most certainly puts it in perspective for us when we see what our military does for our country. God bless them!
What a beautiful sentiment. I am one of two houses on my block who flies the flag. When I moved to this house the first thing we did was erect the flag. My neighbor who also flies his flag has done two tours in Iraq and is just now retiring. Every time I see him I thank him for his service, he lives two doors down and we see each other a lot so he is kinda sick of it but I can’t shut up about it. He did something that I didn’t want to do, something incredibly important. I’m sure people thank him when he is wearing his uniform but if you really want to thank a vet, fly your flag on more days than flag day and the 4th.
I am a big supporter of the troops, but I shamefully admit when my teenage daughter wanted to sign up with the National Guard last summer I was scared shitless.
They do a service so many of us are not willing to do and we should not take it lightly.
